Westnetz GmbH

Clean Code and Sustainable Modernization

Westnetz GmbH

Context

Westnetz GmbH operates one of the largest and most diverse GIS landscapes in the German energy sector. In an environment defined by numerous applications, specialized procedures, and custom processes, a vast array of scripts, automations, and 'glue code' naturally evolves over time. While these individual extensions are critical, their maintenance and scalability become increasingly challenging as complexity grows. To ensure the long-term stability of their GIS processes, Westnetz partnered with Uptility GmbH. The objective was to optimize and standardize existing codebases, ensuring they are robust and ready for future requirements.

Project Focus

  • Generalization of existing scripts to significantly reduce redundancies
  • Implementation of modular code structures, allowing central functions to be maintained in a single, unified location
  • Modernization of programming languages and libraries to enhance performance and long-term maintainability
  • Optimization of project architecture to ensure lasting readability and extensibility
  • Integration of expert knowledge in Git version control, release management, and deployment workflows

Result

Through this support, Westnetz established a clearer, more stable, and maintainable codebase. The new modular structures ensure better traceability, simplified updates, and a significant reduction in future maintenance efforts. At the same time, teams benefit from more efficient daily workflows.

"The collaboration with Uptility GmbH has helped us modernize our existing codebase sustainably. The clear structure, modularization, and professional Git and deployment setups significantly facilitate our daily development work. Uptility understood exactly where our challenges lie – and delivered solutions that are viable in the long term."
